When cataract symptoms can no longer be managed without surgery, Dr. Zelenak provides expert care using the latest lens technology. With a blend of skill, compassion and innovation, he helps patients achieve clearer vision and an improved quality of life.
Ogemaw Eye Institute offers Advanced Technology Intraocular Lenses for your cataract surgery. Talk with Dr. Zelenak and his team about which lens best suits your vision and lifestyle needs.
The eye’s natural lens helps focus light on the retina. In cataract surgery or refractive lens exchange (RLE), the natural lens is removed and replaced with a clear artificial lens called an intraocular lens (IOL). The IOL replaces the focusing power that was lost when the natural lens was removed surgically. Different IOLs can reduce or even eliminate the need for glasses. After a full eye exam, Dr. Zelenak and his team will assist in choosing the option best suited for your vision needs and lifestyle.
A monofocal IOL provides clear vision at one set distance. The IOL can be set for either distance or near vision. Most people have the monofocal lens set for distance and use glasses for reading or computer use. If the IOL is set for near, glasses would be needed for distance tasks such as driving and watching television. Some patients choose monovision, one eye corrected for distance, the other for near. This reduces dependence on glasses but may affect depth perception. For patients seeking clear vision at multiple distances, advanced technology IOLs are available.
A toric IOL is used to correct astigmatism. Astigmatism has to do with the shape of the front of the eye and affects the way it focuses light. A standard monofocal IOL can correct for nearsightedness or farsightedness but does not correct astigmatism. A toric IOL can correct for all of these conditions and provides better quality of vision for people who have astigmatism. A toric lens will greatly reduce the need for glasses but will not necessarily eliminate them. Most people with monofocal toric lenses still need reading glasses for fine print. Toric IOLs are considered by insurance companies to be a premium lens and may have out-of-pocket cost associated with them.
Multifocal IOLs are designed to provide a full range of vision. There are different styles of multifocal IOLs including Trifocal IOLs and Extended Depth of Focus (EDOF) lenses. Multifocal lenses can correct nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism.
Trifocal IOLs provide a full range of vision. Patients are able to see clearly at three focal points: Near (typically for reading), Intermediate (for tasks like seeing the computer or dashboard) and Far (for tasks like driving and watching the television). This is especially helpful for patients who require vision at many distances. Trifocal lenses are designed to provide excellent intermediate vision, which is especially important in today’s digital age.
Ogemaw Eye Institute was among the first in the U.S. to offer trifocal lens implants. The Alcon PanOptix® and PanOptix Pro are the most advanced trifocals available.
EDOF IOLs provide a greater range of vision, allowing patients to see clearly at various distances including near, intermediate and far. This reduces the need for glasses for most daily activities. EDOF lenses are designed to minimize issues like glare and halos that can occur with other multifocal lenses. EDOF lenses aim to mimic the natural focusing ability of the eye to provide a more seamless visual experience.
A complete eye evaluation will determine which IOL is right for you. PanOptix Pro, Vivity® and Odyssey™ are a good choice for patients who want to greatly reduce their need or possibly eliminate their need for glasses. Multifocal and EDOF lenses provide sharp vision at all distances, especially helpful to those who spend time on computers or enjoy hobbies requiring close focus. Many patients with multifocal lenses are free of glasses following surgery. Multifocal lenses are considered by insurance companies to be a premium lens and will have out-of-pocket cost associated with them.
